Drop in - not out

Training sessions!! We'll be running drop in sessions throughout the semester on a whole variety of subjects, starting with 'How to Research', Using e-resources and in depth instructions on using the main databases. You can have a look at the October timetable on the UEL Business wiki or on the library pages.

If there are any sessions you want to happen, let me know and I'll organise it for you. And if you just can't wait then come and ask me for help!

First Day of Term

Blimey, it's busy in the library! The first day of term has come round with a bang again and suddenly woken us all up after the quiet of the Summer months.

Well done to all of those who are starting at UEL this year - and welcome back to the rest of you! Now we're back into the new year I should (in theory) be updating the blog more. To start you all off, there are going to be walking tours of the library within your induction week, so make sure you come along and see where everything is - I promise it'll be no more than 15 minutes out of your day.

Coming up, there are going to be sessions showing you all the resources that will be useful to you when you're researching essays. Databases like EBSCO and ABI Inform and learning how to use Boolean search logic. If you didn't understand a word of that, sign up for a session! Dates and times coming soon....

We're open 24 hours again from next Monday and I'll be here late next Tuesday so pop in and point and stare at the strange librarian behind the desk.

Osborne vows to ‘pick fight’ with Brussels

George Osborne has declared that he's going to 'pick a fight' with Brussels over a raft of agreements in Europe. It is thought that by cutting large amounts of red tape such as adherence to the Working Time Directive, relaxing redundancy regulations and reviewing health and safety legislation, around £14bn a year could be saved by businesses in the UK.

The full report will be out on Friday, and I'll be finding links to it as soon as possible. Until then, here are the FT and Guardians view of the matter.

Business and Web 2.0

I was sent this link to a discussion on Web 2.0 between authors Andrew Keen and David Weinberger. The article looks at how Web 2.0 is being used and how it is changing the way in which people live and work. The most interesting part is the discussion on how the internet and particularly 2.0 applications are changing the way businesses work.

The part that deals with business starts about half way down abd begins with a question from Weinberger:
'Now a question: For academics, scientists and serious intellectuals, do you think the Web is nothing but a disaster? In fact, since businesses learned long ago that knowledge is social, do you seriously maintain that the work of business -- I'm not here thinking of ecommerce -- can only be degraded by being done on the Web?'

So, this would be the first post in the UEL Business Librarian blog! The aim of the blog is to keep you up to date with what's happening in the library (new resources, training), snippets of news from the business world that I pick up on, useful websites, useful blogs and useful tools I find kicking about the place.
If you want to find out more about the library, visit my website or www.uel.ac.uk
If you want to contact me, click on the e-mail me link or s.crosthwaite@uel.ac.uk
Or if you're passing, pop into the library and ask for me!
